Holy Björk! What would be more intimidating, having Marina Abromović gaze into your eyes… or Björk?

72pt Sans Serif #686

I’ll be honest. I have an ongoing love-affair with type. It doesn’t matter if it is digital, on a photopolymer plate, or cast metal… I love typography.

My friend and studio-mate Christopher dela Pole and I have been investing heavily in letterpress technology lately. We’ve both got the itch to make some new, dare I say, amazing text art projects in the very near future. One of our Ebay treasures has arrived today: this beautiful 72pt Sans Serif font. I can’t wait to get some ink on these…

I avoided making New Years resolutions this time around… but find that I have delayed all of my resolutions, plans for change, and regrets for my birthday… this Saturday. Most people feel like the “milestone” years are something like 18, 21, 30… but for me, 28 is turning out to be a pivotal year. I’m finally feeling like I can grasp the idea of “satisfaction” and the joy that could come from controlling one’s actions, environment, and lifestyle.

Case in point, I’m in love with this design for a home. It seems like the perfect mix of environments, inside and outside, private and public. The only thing that I would change would be the transparency of the glass. It would have to be adjustable…

Walking, Meditating, Summarizing

In the spirit of Richard Long’s text and sculptures involving the process of walking, I’ve decided that I am going to document each of the times during my day that I merge into walking meditation. Ideally, I’m going to force myself to summarize each walk in just a few images. Superficially, the process of walking is… incredibly boring, basic, and often overlooked. I’ll be the first to admit that I sometimes dread the end of my workday and the ensuing 30 minute walk, almost always following the same path, to my home. I’ve tried wearing an iPod, talking on the phone, and what not, however, the process of walking demands my attention. And so, I’ll surrender to the ordinary again. Perhaps the greatest entertainment isn’t entertaining… it is simply being present.

What exactly is it I have been doing? Well, slowly but surely, I have accepted a new role as a manager at AIM. I am continuing to photograph (outdoors, thankfully) and am easing my way out of my winter cocoon. When the snow recedes, Minneapolis comes back to something like life. The spaces that were piled high with unappeasable snowdrifts, have now been reclaimed as sidewalks, public spaces, parks, and all the interstitial spaces of a city.
