The Watchers

After relocating to Milwaukee in November 2014, I became aware of the Milwaukee General Mitchell International Airport plane watcher’s lot. Exploring Foucault’s concept of Heterotopia, or places of otherness, this ongoing project seeks to document the environment and users of this particular in-between space.  This small parcel of parking lot, located adjacent to the airport, […]

August 29th, 2015: Silent couple parked at the lot for 30 mins or so. Possibly a pair that hasn’t spoken for 15 years unless talking about the dog.

August 29th, 2015: Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport:  First couple of plane watchers I’ve observed so heavily invested in plane movements, breaking from taking iPhone photos of planes only to pick lint off of each other. Called out each plane, airline, and destination loudly, but I couldn’t tell if they were trying to start a […]

November 22nd, 2014: Father/Son duo.  Hoping to capture on the air traffic around the Thanksgiving weekend, but the watcher’s lot was nearly deserted. Cold weather means everyone is sealed inside their cars and conversations must be interpreted through gesture, content guessed at through nods

September 13th, 2014: Black Honda SUV with a Mother and Son. Over the course of their stay (45 minutes), they argued endlessly. They covered every topic possible: who was eating all the french fries, her overspending on herself, and his poor choice of a girlfriend. Of all the people at the parking lot I have […]

September 13th, 2014: A young couple brought their two kids, one in a stroller, to the parking lot. While watching the planes, the older of the two children took off–running down the length of the space. The adults followed and left their younger child, in the stroller, to observe.

September 07th, 2014: By far this has been the most emotionally invested user of the lot. This man arrived in his SUV and parked next to me. He checked his cellphone and then hopped out of the car. For 5 minutes he stood, heavily leaning into the fence. Again he checked his phone, looking specifically […]

September 06th, 2014: My first encounter with a “true plane watcher”. This man never left his car. He alternated taking notes, looking through binoculars, and running his air conditioner. Keen interest in the private planes using the airport, but littler interest in any of the commercial planes or the people also in the space.

August 27th, 2014: First trip to the MKE-International Airport Plane Watcher’s Lot. I wonder if I will be on some TSA watch list because of my repeated trips so close to the security theater of the airport. Immediately before leaving, this family appeared next to me:  Grandmother, Father, Son. The father, clearly distracted and mentally […]
