Informal/Slow Growth Architecture

Yes! I’m sorry about the repost, but I finally figured out how to get a decent sized image onto my blog via the iPad… Turns out its best to do this thru flickr.

Anyway, this is what I’m talking about when I refer to informal architecture. The base of this building was probably constructed during the French colonial period. Over the ensuing decades, this hybrid tower structure emerged – crowned with the anathema of the socialist revolution, commercial advertising space.

Harsh afternoon heat. Hiding out as long as possible in the relative shade and cool of the art museum.

A marriage truly made in the depths of hell. It took me over 2 hours to put this photo on here. Seriously. Shouldn’t this type of functionality just be built in?

Oh! Wait! It was all just a performance…

I enjoy complaining. In fact, I’d say that a solid 30% of my day is spent complaining about something. Today, I’d like to just briefly air my displeasure regarding the current state of performative elements in art. My lament is basically this: when did it become acceptable to be a complete douchebag, embarrass yourself and your colleagues, and then pass it all off by saying, “Oh it was a performance”?

My attention is drawn to a local artist who’s claim to fame is being rather idiotic on a decidedly idiotic tv show about artists trying to make it big. After the show was said and done and we all witnessed the blasé horrors which were that particular event of reality TV, this artist gets credit by saying it was all just a performance.

Right.

Perhaps I’m wrong and this strategy could come in really handy. For example, I am going to do a piece that “examines the relationship between debtor and consumer” by maxing out my credit card. When I get the bill, I’ll just send a note to the credit card company saying, “This was a performance. I’m not going to pay. Ok?”

We’ll see how that goes.

Winter…

…it is coming. In case you forgot.

There are preciously few people that I actually enjoy being around. My friends Haley and Matt just happen to be two of them. As you know, I normally hesitate when taking photographs of others of my species, however, shooting these two was rather enjoyable! They’re starting up a new food/restaurant/dining blog… details to follow soon!

This image goes out to my good friend Patty. She is somewhere in the Western US at the moment, driving to Portland. Cheers.
